Eye Candy

Filed under: Restoration Progress — admin @ 2:51 am

The painters finished up (for the most part) the north and west faces of the house. Here are some pictures of their hard work. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I’ll let the pictures do the talking. All I can say is that I finally have a storybook Victorian home, and I love it!!!

Exterior Update

Filed under: Restoration Progress — admin @ 5:16 am

The painters were here again today. They managed to get a coat on the west side siding, as well as finishing a coat on the west side gable. They got the rest of the porch primed, and finalized some trim. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow, but be nice on Saturday. He said that they’ll be back out on Saturday, but might be here tomorrow if the rain doesn’t come as anticipated.

He mentioned that they WERE going to come out last Sunday, and yes, he knew it was Sunday. He said that it was raining there at 6:30 in the morning, and that the rain was expected to clear out in the afternoon. He called his crew and told them that they weren’t going out … the rain stopped at about 9 and never started up again. I told him that we had no rain whatsoever out here. Oh well …

No pictures today. I’ll update with pictures after they finish on Saturday.

Interior update

Filed under: Restoration Progress — admin @ 4:23 am

I’ve been on vacation this week to try and get some stuff done in the foyer. I’ve got some of the baseboards installed, some of the plinth blocks, and some of the casing. All in all, it’s coming along nicely. I hope to have most of the wood installed prior to our New Year’s Eve get-together.

Here’s a picture of some of the woodwork. The quartersawn red oak looks pretty nice. I imagine it will look even better once I get some finish on it.

No News Update

Filed under: Restoration Progress — admin @ 4:28 am

Well, the painters didn’t come by on Sunday like they said they would. I kind of figured that they wouldn’t. So, we’re sitting here with an almost completed front, and a gray west side. Looks like the next best chance for good painting weather will be this Saturday. If all goes well, I should be able to get a few pictures to post.

On the inside, I’ve got one door frame cased, and only need the corner blocks, which, unfortunately, won’t be here until mid January. I told my sweetheart that I would MAKE cornerblocks if I had time, but … absent that, will bne putting up moulding sans cornerblocks…

“Principled” Republicans and Other Musings

Filed under: Political Rants — admin @ 4:28 am

I know, I know … I haven’t written too much opinion lately. Quite frankly, I haven’t had much worth saying … just little bits here and there. Well, now, I actually have something to say.

It seems as if the Senate Republicans are taking a stand. What I don’t understand, however, is how can they possibly imagine, in their wildest dreams, they they should be taken seriously.

Ol’ Mitch McConnell almost sounded libertarian today when he talked about the government and it’s role vis a’ vis corporate America. I wish I could remember the exact quote.

Others were just as pious in their sound bites, but we ALL know the real reason that they voted against the paltry 14 billion dollar bailout for big auto … they were all pissed off at the UAW for spending big money on the Democratic candidates and helping them lose even more seats.

If they were so principled, they wouldn’t have passed the 700 billion dollar bailout of the banking industry. Actually it was more like 850 after the Senate filled it with pork. “Principled” … my ass.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that they voted against it, but only a few were principled enough to actually mean it. Senator Bunning was one. He railed against the financial industry bailout, and voted against it, and did the same with the current handout proposal. I may vote for him when he comes up for reelection.

I was SHOCKED …. STUNNED … FLABBERGASTED … to learn that the governor of Illinois was arrested on corruption charges. This is TRULY a black eye on the upstanding political arena of Illinois, and especially on the face of Chicago politics. < /sarcasm >

Another Colorful Update!

Filed under: Restoration Progress — admin @ 3:28 am

I took some new pictures today, since the sun was out, and was able to better capture what is becoming a work of art, as far as I am concerned.

I’ll start with a couple of exterior shots of the gable and the front of the house:

Next are some views of the completed porch. Well, almost completed. The floor still hasn’t been painted. It will be either Red or Terra Cotta, I can’t remember which.

More Painting Today

Filed under: Restoration Progress — admin @ 3:21 am

Since it was so cold out today, the painters worked on the porch. They got most everything primed, and even got some color on the ceiling. I’ll have to get a picture, but you’ll have to wait till tomorrow’s update, when there’s more color on the porch.

The painter said that he wants to concentrate on finishing the gable whenever the weather permits so that he can get the lift out from in front of the house. He’s also hoping to have the porch finished by the end of Saturday, so that we can take the plastic off. I told him no hurry on the plastic, I kinda like the pseudo-closed-in porch in this cold weather…

We’ve had quite a few positive comments on the color scheme. I’m liking it alot.

Colors! Colors!!! Lots of Colors!!!

Filed under: Restoration Progress — admin @ 2:24 am

The painters primed the house last week and yesterday, and started putting the colors on the front of the house. It’s looking pretty good, although there is still a good bit of work to be done detail-wise. That’s going to get held up for a few days while Louisville’s “Storm teams” help us get through the impending blizzard and save us from certain death. (Excuse me while I run over to Kroger and get a few gallons of milk and a case of bread …)

In the meantime, they’re going to work on the front porch, which they have weathered in with plastic and propane heaters.

It is looking pretty good. Here are a couple of sneaks at the “work in progress”
